CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The New Zealand Coastal Society invite you to share your knowledge, stories and love of the coastal and marine environment at this year’s conference located in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Thank you for taking the time to submit an Abstract for the upcoming NZCS Conference 2026.

Key Dates:

Call for Abstracts open: 1 June 2026
Abstracts close: 19 July 2026
Candidates will be advised outcome by: 14 August 2026

2026 Conference Themes:

Coastal Science and Hazards

This session explores fundamental and applied research that advances understanding of coastal processes and hazards, including erosion, inundation, sediment transport, sea-level rise, and extreme events.
Monitoring Techniques and Programmes

This session showcases emerging monitoring technologies, field methods, remote-sensing applications, and long-term monitoring programmes used to observe and better understand coastal environments.
Resilience, People and Mātauranga Māori

This session focuses on community-led and people-centred research, planning, and adaptation initiatives that strengthen coastal resilience. Contributions incorporating mātauranga Māori, Indigenous knowledge, community values, and collaborative decision-making are particularly encouraged.
Marine Science and Coastal Ecosystems

This session presents fundamental and applied research relating to marine biology, coastal ecology, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity, and the interactions between coastal processes and ecological systems.
Ports and Coastal Infrastructure

This session focuses on coastal engineering research, projects, and emerging technologies supporting the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and adaptation of ports and coastal infrastructure.
Coastal Data Management and Processing

This session explores innovative approaches to collecting, managing, processing, analysing, and sharing coastal data. Topics may include software development, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data portals, databases, modelling tools, and decision-support systems.
Pacific Outreach and Case Studies

This session highlights coastal and marine research, projects, and case studies from across the Pacific. It aims to strengthen connections between Pacific communities, practitioners, researchers, and organisations, while encouraging knowledge exchange and collaboration between Pacific nations and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Abstract Guidelines:

These Abstract Guidelines will assist you with filling out the online Abstract Submission Form.
Please take a moment to read through before submitting your Abstract for consideration.

Presentation Options:

Select a presentation that is either: Oral or Poster
Students: Please select ‘yes’ if the presenting author is a student.

Abstract Content:

Please fill out the abstract template provided and attached to the form submission
Use APA 7th referencing
Include all authors credited for the Abstract
Include a short Bio for each presenter *No more than 200 words
There is a one-page limit for the Abstract using the formatting provided in the template
No figures to be included

Abstract Submission:

Once you have completed your abstract using our required template - submit your abstract using the NZCS Conference - Abstract Submission Form

Conference Registrations:

All confirmed presenters will need to register for the conference
Registrations will open 14 May 2026

Important Notes:

Preparation and supply of any handouts or materials used in presentations is the responsibility of the authors.
As a commitment to attend and support the NZCS Conference, accepted presenters are expected to register and pay for attending the conference.
All costs to attend the conference, including the registration fee, must be met by presenters.
