Field Trip

Conference Field Trips

Equipped with a packed lunch, you will be taken on a guided tour via bus around the island. You will hear from a range of presenters and view a variety of unique coastal landscapes and coastal projects. Two options are available:

Field Trip 1 - Urban and Beach

Explore Waiheke Islands popular north facing sandy beaches of Onetangi, Palm Beach, and Oneroa, and the contrasting south facing coastline of Blackpool, to consider the recreational amenity, coastal processes and coastal hazard challenges these sites face. Then continue on to Ostend Domain, to experience the recreational boating hub of 'The Causeway', with its houseboats, mooring, and the Waiheke Boating Club facilities.

Field Trip 2 - Land and Water

Deepen your understanding of Waiheke's coastal and marine environment and take in some history and culture. This trip will contrast an exploration of the 'bottom end' of Waiheke; home to vineyards, marine reserves, World War II 'coastal defences' with a visit to marine based locations including the Kennedy Point Marina development* and the Te Matuku Oyster farms** including the opportunity to sample some local produce along the way.

* the ability to visit the marine development will be dependent on the local conditions and H&S considerations and will be determined closer to the time.
**an up close oyster farm experience may be possible for some attendees. If you are interested in 'getting wet', please advise of this when selecting this field trip,
